Family Photo Sessions I Never Skip as a Photographer and Mom

If we haven’t met yet, I’m the one behind the camera here at Gordon Place Photography, and I spend my days capturing the beautiful chaos and sweet in-between moments of families just like yours. I get to witness the gummy grins of brand-new babes, the joyful wiggles of toddlers, and the quiet (or not-so-quiet!) confidence of growing kids. It’s one of the greatest joys of my life.

But beyond the camera—I’m also a mama myself. I know what it feels like to blink and realize another season has passed. The days feel long, sure, but the years? They fly. That’s why, for our own family, I’ve made documenting our story a priority. I thought I’d share a bit of how we do it, in case it sparks something for your own family too. This is what family photography as a Mom truly means to me. It’s capturing the story from the heart, with full awareness of how fleeting these years are.

Traditions I Cherish Most as a Mom and Family Photographer

Every single year, we book a mini session. It’s quick and easy—just enough time to capture who we are right now. One year it’s toothy grins and mismatched socks, the next it’s silly poses and suddenly longer legs. These sessions have become our visual time capsule. Family photography as a Mom becomes even more intentional here. I’m documenting not just the milestones, but the everyday magic and subtle shifts in how we love and connect.

My seven-year-old might finally be over his graphic tee obsession next year (or not!), but either way, I want to remember this exact version of him. We show up as we are, and I treasure every single frame.

Going Deeper: Our Every-Other-Year Full Session

Every other year, we invest in a full session. This is where we get to tell a little more of our story. Like how our home has changed, how our connections have deepened, how we’ve grown together.

These sessions give me a chance to be in the photos, not just taking them. And as a mama who’s usually behind the lens, that feels incredibly special. These images remind me that I was there, too. Loving, guiding, laughing, snuggling. It’s really being part of the story, not just recording it.

What I Cherish (and What I Bring to Every Session I Photograph)

When I photograph my own family, and yours too, here’s what I always hold close:

  • Real connection – Those little glances, tight hugs, and belly laughs. That’s the good stuff!
  • Comfort first – We follow your kids’ lead. Breaks are okay. Snacks are welcome. It should feel relaxed and fun.
  • Timelessness – My goal is for you to love these images not just now, but when your kids are grown and have little ones of their own.
  • The story of now – From favorite toys to the family pup, I love documenting the tiny details that make this season special.

More than anything, I hope this encourages you to say yes to being in the frame. Even carving out time to tell your family’s story or just whatever it looks like right now. You don’t have to wait for things to be “just right.” The beauty is already there.

And I’d be honored to help you capture it.
