There’s a lot of unknowns when you bring home a new baby. Your newborn session shouldn’t be one of them.

Babies are their own beautiful mystery – what are they giggling at? What song will put her to sleep today? Will he sleep through the night tonight? With all these questions, you shouldn’t add to the mystery when booking your newborn session. I’m going to pose to you some of the most common questions I hear when it comes to newborn sessions…AND give you all the answers! Bye bye, mystery!

What is a lifestyle newborn session?

A lifestyle newborn session is one that is focused around your connection with your baby. Instead of having the entire session be all about baby, it’s about the family you’ve built. This means, mama, dada, sister, brother, even pupper are included in the session. Of course, we’ll still capture those yummy newborn details of tiny toes and button noses, but I also want you to be able to look back and remember how tiny their hand was compare to yours.

Does a lifestyle newborn session happen in a studio with props?

Nope! To me, nothing says “lifestyle” more than being in your home. Amidst the chaos of bringing home a newborn, there are these beautiful moment of calm and peace that can be easily missed or forgotten. I don’t want you to forget.

How soon should I have my newborn session after bringing home the baby?

The beautiful thing about lifestyle sessions is that they can happen at any time. You may have heard some parents talk about having a newborn session during the first week or two of their baby’s life. That’s likely from families who have done more posed newborn sessions (think babies with props and backdrops in a studio setting). In a lifestyle session where we’re holding and snuggling your baby, their age isn’t as important. I’ve photographed babies from 1 week to 10 weeks. They’re all beautiful. Just remember, newborns change and grow quickly, so you may want a session on the earlier side.

How am I supposed to make my home look photo ready with a newborn?

You’re not! I remember those hazy, exhausted days when you bring your new baby home. The last thing you want to be doing is cleaning your whole home. Thankfully, I plan with my families far in advance so you know where we’ll be shooting ahead of time. Rule of thumb – if there’s a big window, you can bet we’ll be hanging there. And whether baby books, bottles, blankets, all of these sweet things are what make your season, and they can be so sweet in your images.

What do I wear? I have no idea how to dress my body anymore.

This is probably the most common question I get from new mamas, and I so know exactly how you feel. Your body has gone through so many changes in the past year. The last thing I want is for you to look back on these images and only see you being uncomfortable. So I always say please wear whatever makes you feel comfortable and like you. Jeans? Great! Flowy dress? Lovely! A robe? Let’s do it!
